MAT 402 Polymer Engineering: Processing and Applications
This course focuses on the engineering applications of polymers, with emphasis on polymer processing, structure–property–processing relationships, and product and process design. Topics include: Overview of polymer materials and their use in industrial and high-technology applications Polymer melt flow behavior and rheological properties relevant to processing Polymer processing techniques, including extrusion, injection molding, thermoforming, blow molding, compression molding, and transfer molding Polymer film production methods (blown film, cast film) and orientation effects Development of microstructure during processing, including crystallization under flow, anisotropy, shrinkage, and residual stresses Design and manufacturing of reinforced polymer systems Micro- and nanofabrication methods involving polymers Common polymer processing defects, their rheological and processing origins, and mitigation strategies Design for manufacture, strength, toughness, and “design for X” approaches Use of theoretical models and computational tools in polymer product and process design Life-cycle analysis, sustainability, and circular economy concepts applied to polymer-based products Industrial case studies, site visits, and a team-based design project integrating product specification, process selection, equipment selection, and sustainability assessment
