EE 48011 Secure and Energy-Constrained Integrated Bioelectronic Systems
Not in the Spring 2026-2027 schedule — this is the most recent term it ran.
This course examines the electronic design principles required to interface engineered biological systems with integrated circuits and microfluidic platforms. Electronic biosensors have evolved significantly since the 1950s and are now widely used to monitor critical signals in healthcare, agriculture, environmental systems, and biomanufacturing. At the same time, engineered biological systems, such as engineered microbes and cell-free platforms, offer molecular-level specificity and adaptive responses that often surpass purely electronic sensors in sensitivity and selectivity. Effectively translating biological responses into quantitative electrical signals requires carefully designed electronic interfaces, including low-noise analog front ends, transduction circuits, signal processing, and integrated microfluidic control. This course focuses on the circuit- and system-level challenges associated with integrating engineered biological systems with electronics under the power, energy, and resource constraints of real-world applications. Additionally, the course focuses on physical-layer security techniques for protecting bioelectronic sensing and communication systems, emphasizing secure operation in distributed, energy-constrained platforms.
