EE 423 Embedded Systems
Not in the Spring 2026-2027 schedule — this is the most recent term it ran.
The course targets the design of an embedded system utilizing a 32-bit architecture (ARM, RISC-V) to achieve a computationally intensive task such as image or speech processing, or high data rate sensors. Students will be proved with a microntroller platform incorporating a display interface, ADCs, camera, motor driver, Ethernet/Wi-Fi, etc. the control of which require intensive computation and handling high data rates. The focus will be on the utilization of system resources such as DMA, flash memory interface, graphics accelerators, or UART/SPI interface buffers for the construction of a high performance embedded system. An industry standard code development platform in association with a lightweight embedded operating systems (such as FreeRTOS) will be utilized for register level C/C++ programming. Topics will include: • Efficient use of Hardware Abstraction Libraries for high performance device drivers • Use of DMA for high speed data sources such as ADC, memory or SPI used for Ethernet/Wi-Fi • Camera or audio interfacing • Use of hardware accelerators for graphics display interfacing • Use of RTOS for task scheduling
